What Should You Check Before Getting a Lifting Procedure? |

One-line answer: Before booking a lifting procedure, there are really just five things worth checking: the device's approval number, who's actually doing the procedure, whether you can see the cartridge opened, the contract and refund terms, and whether side effects were explained to you. We didn't include "cheap means risky" — we couldn't find evidence for it.
The approval number and the ad-review number aren't the same thing
Device brochures often show a number, but there are actually two kinds. The approval/certification number covers the device's actual safety and performance (under Korea's Medical Device Act). The ad-review number just means the marketing copy was checked against advertising rules — and that review has to be renewed every three years. Since January 2024, Korea's MFDS has run a public lookup site (emedi.mfds.go.kr) where you can search devices by clinic. But honestly, the easiest way is just to ask at your consultation: "Can you tell me this device's approval number?" There's no reason that should be hard to answer.
Who's actually performing your procedure today
Korea's Supreme Court has ruled that cosmetic procedures count as medical practice, and in a 2023 case, both a clinic director and a nurse assistant were fined after the assistant performed RF lifting. That said, a separate Jeju court case found a nurse assistant not guilty where a doctor was genuinely supervising the procedure. So it's not automatically illegal for an assistant to be involved — what matters is whether a doctor was substantively involved. Simple approach: ask who's doing your procedure, then check that the person who actually shows up matches who you were told.
Can you watch the cartridge get opened
Ultrasound lifting cartridges are rated for a set number of uses. You'll often see it claimed that reusing them violates a "single-use device" law — but the official list of devices that ban applies to doesn't actually include these cartridges. The rule that does apply is different: it prohibits altering a device from its approved specifications. We also couldn't find published research reporting infections or burns specifically from cartridge reuse, so we're not going to claim that happens — but asking to watch the cartridge get opened is a simple, reasonable thing to do either way.
Contracts and refunds — the most common actual problem
This might be the most surprising one. According to Korea Consumer Agency data published in 2021 (covering complaints from 2019–2020), contract issues made up 50.6% of cosmetic-procedure complaints — more than side effects, at 38.5%. Refund refusals alone accounted for 97 cases. Lifting procedures are often sold in multi-session or multi-area packages, which makes prepayment common. Before you commit, it's worth asking what happens if you stop partway through, and whether the refund terms are actually written down. For what it's worth, we couldn't find any study linking price level to complication rates.
Did anyone actually explain the possible side effects
Lifting procedures generally report favorable safety profiles. A 2020 meta-analysis (17 studies, 477 patients) found average pain of 4.2 out of 10 with no reported pigmentation issues, and a 2025 systematic review of 45 papers put nerve irritation and unintended fat atrophy both under 1%. But no study we found actually reported a burn rate — the more serious cases (blistering, ulceration) came from a case series of just 5 patients, with no denominator, so there's no way to know how many out of how many. That's why we won't state a firm percentage. If you ask "could this not suit me?" and get told "that won't happen," that answer doesn't match any study we've seen.
At Miso Clinic, we think a well-done procedure shouldn't be obvious. We choose the approach based on your skin as it is now, not based on a product we're trying to sell — and sometimes not recommending something is part of the visit too.
FAQ
Q. If a device has an ad-review number, does that mean it's approved? No. The ad-review number only means the marketing text was checked against advertising rules. The actual device approval is a separate number under different regulations.
Q. Is it always illegal for a nurse assistant to perform lifting procedures? Not necessarily — court rulings have gone both ways. Some cases found both the director and the assistant guilty; others found no guilt where a doctor was genuinely supervising. The key question is whether the assistant went beyond an assisting role.
Q. Are cheaper clinics more dangerous? We couldn't find research showing a link between price and complication rates. What the data does show is that contract and refund issues are common — in 2021 published figures, about half of all complaints were contract-related, not safety-related.
