Is It Normal for Bruising to Last Two Weeks After an Injection? |

One-line answer: Bruising after an injectable treatment normally lasts 1-2 weeks, or up to 3 weeks in slow-circulation areas like under the eyes. If the color is moving through red → blue → green → yellow, it's being absorbed and you just wait — but if it's not changing color, or pain is getting worse, contact your clinic right away.
Bruising and swelling are not the same thing
A bruise happens when a needle nicks a small blood vessel and blood pools under the skin. Swelling happens when the injected substance and the tissue's reaction cause fluid to build up between tissues. Since the causes differ, so does the timeline. Swelling shows up immediately, peaks around 24-48 hours, and usually settles within 2-5 days. Bruising cycles through several colors and can take 1-2 weeks, up to 3 weeks in slower areas. It's actually normal for the area to look smaller around day 3-5 as swelling goes down and only the bruise remains.
How a bruise fades, color by color
- Day 0-2: red/purple — red blood cells that leaked out are still intact
- Day 3-5: blue/deep navy — hemoglobin loses oxygen and looks darker. This is usually when people feel it's "gotten worse"
- Day 5-10: green — hemoglobin is breaking down into biliverdin
- Day 7-14: yellow/light brown — the final stage, converting to bilirubin before it's absorbed
- After that: gone (though under-eyes, jawline, and hands can take up to 3 weeks)
When someone tells us it's still there at two weeks, the first thing we ask isn't how long — it's what color. If it's moving toward yellow or light brown, that's the last stage and you just wait. If it's still the original red or purple after two weeks, that's worth a look.
Why bruising varies so much from person to person
Same treatment, same amount, very different results — that's normal. Blood thinners (aspirin, antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication), supplements like ginkgo, omega-3, or vitamin E, and alcohol the night before all tend to make bruising bigger and longer-lasting (never stop a prescribed medication on your own, though). Thin-skinned, blood-vessel-dense areas like under the eyes bruise the most and the longest. Blunt-tipped cannulas generally cause less bruising than needles by pushing vessels aside rather than through them, though cannulas aren't suitable for every area. Skin naturally bruises more easily with age as the tissue supporting blood vessels thins out.
What actually helps, and what's less proven
- Cold compress (first 24-48 hours): constricts vessels, limits further bleeding and swelling
- Warm compress (after 48 hours): helps reabsorb pooled blood — don't do this in the first two days, or it can make swelling worse
- Sleeping with your head elevated (first 2-3 days): helps with facial swelling
- Arnica and bromelain: research results are mixed, so we can't promise they'll help — you can use them, but without a guarantee
- Firm massaging or rubbing is not recommended, since it can disturb the injected material or re-irritate healing vessels
This is not a bruise — contact your clinic right away
- The area turns noticeably pale or white
- A net-like or branching red-purple pattern spreads across the skin
- Pain keeps getting worse over time instead of improving
- Blurred vision or eye pain (this is an emergency — go to a medical facility immediately)
- The area turns cold and a dark gray-purple
- Fever, spreading heat and redness, or pus
- A firm lump that's growing
Miso Clinic believes a well-done treatment shouldn't be obvious. Before any injection, we ask about current medications, choose cannula or needle based on the area, check for upcoming events worth rescheduling around, and avoid overcorrecting — especially with fillers that can't be dissolved.
FAQ
Q. My bruise is still there at two weeks — should I get it checked? Focus on color, not just time. If it's moving toward yellow or light brown, that's the final absorption stage and you can wait. If it's unchanged from the original red/purple, or spreading, get it looked at.
Q. My bruise looks darker than when it started — did something go wrong? Looking darkest around day 3-5 is normal. If darkening color comes with worsening pain, though, contact your clinic.
Q. Is there a way to make bruising go away faster? Cold compress for the first 24-48 hours, then warm compress after that. Elevating your head while sleeping helps too. Mostly, though, time does the work — there's only so much you can speed it up.
