Is Men's Lifting Actually Different? Only One Difference Holds Up | 남성 리프팅은 여성과 뭐가 다를까요?

One-line answer: There is no male-specific lifting guideline, and the field openly admits it. Almost every "men's lifting" recommendation in circulation was carried over from data collected on women. Exactly one sex difference is solid enough to state plainly: botulinum toxin dosing.
Nobody has reported outcomes split by sex
Four separate reviews between them cover more than 60 clinical studies. Across all of them, we could not find a single study reporting efficacy results broken out by sex.
- Systematic review of ultrasound lifting (2023), 16 studies — states outright that all studies were conducted on female patients
- Ultrasound meta-analysis (2025), 475 patients (333 women, 142 men) — no sex-stratified results
- Systematic review of ultrasound (2025), 45 studies — sex distribution not even reported
- Multicenter radiofrequency study (2026), 39 patients (37 women, 2 men) — the paper itself notes that with only 2 male participants, generalization is limited
The 2025 meta-analysis is the striking one. Data from 142 men sat inside that analysis, and not one line of results was reported about them. This is not missing data. Nobody looked at it separately. The authors of the 16-study review even wrote that male skin differs and that it would be interesting to know whether these findings replicate in men.
That "male skin is 20–25% thicker" figure is not from faces
We traced it to its source: a 1975 paper whose abstract opens with collagen, dermal thickness, and collagen density of forearm skin. It is a forearm measurement. Male facial skin genuinely is thicker — but the number everyone quotes did not come from the face.
Bone ages in the same direction in both sexes
The canine fossa angle — the hollow in front of the cheek — decreases significantly in both men and women. A forehead CT study of 180 Korean subjects found the forehead flattening with age in both sexes; men simply start from a more sloped forehead when young. We could not find evidence for the claim that men age on a different timeline and should therefore start at a different age. What is established is that both sexes change in the same direction, with different starting points: forehead slope, mandibular angle, brow position.
The one difference with real evidence: toxin dosing
A prospective, double-blind, randomized dose-ranging trial in 80 men compared total glabellar doses of 20, 40, 60, and 80 units. Forty units outperformed 20 consistently, with both response rate and duration increasing in a dose-dependent way — and adverse events increasing at higher doses too. The conclusion was that men benefit from a starting dose of at least 40 units. That is double the 20-unit standard glabellar dose used for women, and the reason is muscle mass.
But more is not simply better. In separate data, satisfaction by dose ran 60% at 40 units, 51% at 60 units, and 39% at 80 units. The starting point is different. The ceiling is not higher.
"Make me look more masculine" is a shaky goal
A 2023 study analyzing 1,550 faces across 10 cultures found that femininity in female faces contributed significantly to attractiveness (coefficient 0.24), while masculinity in male faces did not show a comparable contribution. So "enhance the masculine contour" rests on weak evidence as a treatment goal. At Miso Clinic the goal we set with male patients is not "look more masculine" — it is "make the thing that bothers you less noticeable." A good result should not announce itself.
One more gap worth naming: the effect of lifting and energy-based devices on bearded areas has never been studied at all.
FAQ
Q. Should men start lifting treatments earlier than women?
We could not find evidence for that. Bony change runs in the same direction in both sexes; what differs is the starting anatomy, not the timing.
Q. I have heard men need more botulinum toxin. True?
For the glabella, yes — a randomized trial in 80 men found 40 units consistently better than 20. But satisfaction dropped as doses climbed to 60 and 80 units, so this is about the starting dose, not about going high.
Q. Are there devices designed specifically for men?
No device or protocol validated specifically for men has been confirmed. The plan follows the skin and muscle in front of us, and if nothing is needed, nothing gets recommended.
