XERF Effector Tips: What Actually Changes Between Them?

제조사 공개 사양은 XERF i05(5×10mm, 400샷, 좁고 얇은 부위), XERF i10(10×10mm, 300샷, 작고 굴곡진 부위), EFFECTOR E40(20×20mm, 600샷, 전체 부위), EFFECTOR E60(20×30mm, 600샷, 넓고 두꺼운 부위)이에요.

One-line answer: A smaller tip heats harder for the same current, while physics and other-field measurements point the opposite way for depth — bigger tips going deeper. But no study has measured depth by tip size in human skin, and the only human tip-comparison study found no statistically significant difference.

It's an established principle: smaller tips heat harder

This isn't unique to aesthetic treatments — it's basic electrosurgery, established at the textbook level. Radiofrequency energy is current, not light. When the same current flows through a narrower area, current density rises, and tissue temperature increase is proportional to the square of current density — double the density, and heating quadruples. This is also why the large return pad on your body is so big: the same current that enters through the facial tip returns through that pad, but its area is dozens of times larger, so current density drops to near-zero and it doesn't heat up. Still, devices adjust power output for each tip's area, so a smaller tip doesn't automatically mean a stronger overall treatment.

Other data suggests bigger tips go deeper

Here's where intuition flips. A smaller, harder-heating tip might seem likely to go deeper too, but other fields point the other way. A 1998 cardiac catheter study found an 8mm electrode made deeper lesions than a 4mm one under every condition tested. A 2014 pain-medicine study found that going from a 22G to a 16G needle increased lesion width by 58–65%. But it's not unconditional — a fixed-output in vitro study (2009) found an 8mm electrode wasn't deeper than a 4mm one. These come from needle/catheter electrodes near cardiac muscle and nerves, not flat tips on facial skin.

Nobody has measured this in human skin yet

We found no study directly measuring and comparing depth or temperature in human skin by tip area. Even Thermage, the longest-selling monopolar RF line, has no confirmed study comparing its tip sizes (0.25, 1.0, 1.5, 3.0 cm²), and its technical manual doesn't describe tip size versus heating depth either. Claims about how deep a tip reaches are estimates from physical models, not direct measurements.

The one human study that compared tip sizes — and its conclusion sentence

There's exactly one, using a different company's monopolar RF device in a split-face design — one side got a 3cm² tip, the other a 4cm² tip, randomly assigned (31 people, ages 29–75, 300 shots per side, energy per area nearly identical at 16.4 vs 16.6 J/cm², 3-month follow-up). The authors' conclusion sentence stated the smaller tip was better for upper-face wrinkles and the larger tip for lower-face sagging — but the actual statistical comparison between the two tips was not significant (p=0.845). The p<0.001 reported elsewhere means "improved versus before treatment," not "better than the other tip." The study also didn't measure temperature or depth — only wrinkle scores.

XERF's four tips, and a specification discrepancy

The manufacturer's published specs list XERF i05 (5×10mm, 400 shots, narrow/thin areas), XERF i10 (10×10mm, 300 shots, small curved areas), EFFECTOR E40 (20×20mm, 600 shots, general areas), and EFFECTOR E60 (20×30mm, 600 shots, wide/thick areas). The electrode pattern dimensions in the summary submitted to the US FDA differ, though: the 60 tip is listed as 27.6×17.6mm, the 40 tip as 17.6×17.6mm, the 10 tip as 9×9mm, and the 05 tip as 9×4.5mm. A human-subject paper also lists the E60 as 27.6×17.6mm (about 4.86cm²) — roughly 20% off from the marketed dimension (20×30mm = 6.0cm²). We could not confirm which figure is the actual conducting area.

The same "300 shots" isn't the same amount across tips

Shot count is a conventional volume unit, but the same number means different things per tip. Using tip area × shot count as a nominal treated area: 300 shots with a 3cm² tip is a baseline of 900cm²; with a 4cm² tip, 1,200cm² — 33% more. The eye-only 0.25cm² tip, even at 300 shots, comes to only about 75cm² — roughly one-twelfth. A shot count means little without the tip specified alongside it.

What matters more than tip size

Tip size isn't the biggest factor in where and how much heat goes in. Raising temperature from 60°C to 90°C increases lesion width by 108–152% — the largest, most firmly established effect. Extending time from 1 to 3 minutes adds 23–32%. Surface cooling keeps the surface safe while the interior runs hotter, and impedance drops roughly 2% per degree as tissue heats. Collagen also depends on how long a temperature is held — denaturation markers halved in 16 seconds at 70°C, but reached only 25% at 2 hours at 55°C, and 2% at 2 hours at 50°C. We found no data linking tip size to pain; reported pain (without anesthesia) ranged from 0.6 to 6 out of 10 across studies, more likely from power settings and protocol than tip size.

FAQ

Q. Does a bigger tip go deeper? Physics and other clinical fields' measurements point that way. But no study has measured depth by tip size in human skin, and a fixed-output counter-example found a bigger electrode was not deeper — so it isn't unconditional.

Q. Is a smaller tip a stronger treatment? For the same current, a narrower area heats harder, since temperature rise is proportional to the square of current density. But devices adjust output to match each tip's area, so a smaller tip doesn't automatically make the whole treatment stronger.

Q. I heard smaller tips are better around the eyes. One paper says so, but the difference between the two tips wasn't statistically significant (p=0.845). Its p<0.001 means "improved versus before treatment," not "better than the other tip." Small tips are used near the eyes mainly because a larger tip doesn't sit evenly against that area.
